Best summer fruits

Many of us take better care of our bodies during the warmer months, and while this should be the case all year round there are some great summer foods available to encourage us all at this time of year. I have put together a list of my favourite summer superfoods to inspire you to take advantage of what they have to offer.

Strawberries

Strawberries are in season now, so don't miss out. Preferably pick your own, or at least go local with these vitamin- and mineral-rich treats. These brilliant berries even contain omega-3, renowned for its health benefits. They taste great on their own or you could try them 'Models Direct style', with a dollop of craime fraiche.

Blueberries

Again packed with vitamins and minerals, blueberries have a mouthwatering flavour and are low GI. They also have a reputation as one of the best sources of antioxidants to be found, so include them in your diet whenever possible. Models Direct love them added to yoghurt for a delicious desert or a super boosting breakfast.

Watermelon

The perfect hot weather fruit! A fantastic thirst quencher, watermelon contains vitamins, minerals and amino acids plus a generous amount of lycopene, an antioxidant believed to prevent many forms of cancer. Blend your watermelon with some ice and a cupful of raspberries for a refreshing summer smoothie - and don't worry about removing the seeds, they're great for you too!

Beetroot

Beetroot contains silica, which aids the uptake of calcium in the body, and also helps to counteract the effects of too much salt. It is widely believed to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. If you aren't generally a great fan of beetroot, why not try the leaves in a salad or blend some juice with lemon, apple and grated ginger root for a zingy summer drink?

Avocado

Avocados are a fabulous summer food. Brimming with omega-3 and vitamins A and E they are great for your skin and your heart. They also contain lecithin, which helps to lower cholesterol and maintain a healthy nervous system. Avocados are delicious with any salad; I like them best with crabmeat, prawns or pine nuts, drizzled with lemon juice and a little olive oil.
